Stern was a 1994 Libertarian candidate for New York governor. He campaigned to bring back the death penalty and to halt daytime traffic construction. Before he dropped out, polls gave him an 18 percent chance for victory. Off the air, Stern is a different person. He has been married to the same woman for twenty years and has three children; he doesn't drink, smoke, or take drugs, and practices transcendental meditation. Stern has a syndicated TV show, and an interview show on the E Network which was recently nominated for a cable 'Ace' award. Born January 12, 1954, Howard Alan Stern grew up in Long Island, New York. He was involved with college radio at Boston University, and worked deejay jobs in Hartford, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. (where he first hooked up with sidekick Robin Quivers). But it was New York's airwaves that proved most hospitable to Stern's flamboyant, clownish, in-your-face style. However, not everyone was amused. The F.C.C. fined The Howard Stern Show's owner, Infinity Broadcasting, $600,000 in 1992.
